System Definitions & Methodology Guide
Comprehensive documentation of Mississippi High School power ranking models, formulas, and statistical metrics
Mississippi Power Index
Primary Power BenchmarkThe raw, unadjusted rating earned by a team based on their on-field results, margin performance against model expectations, and weekly performance point gains/losses.
Because higher classifications (e.g., 7A) start from higher baseline anchors than lower classifications (e.g., 2A or 1A), raw MPI reflects a team's total accumulated power score rather than a direct pound-for-pound statewide comparison.
Relative Mississippi Power Index
Unified Pound-for-Pound ScaleThe class-standardized power index that translates every team's raw MPI onto a unified statewide scale (anchored to Class 7A) by applying historical class-strength deductions across all MHSAA (7A–1A) and MAIS divisions.
Serves as the definitive pound-for-pound statewide ranking benchmark for cross-class comparisons.
Points Above Average
Net Expected Spread MetricA relative performance metric that measures exactly how many points better (or worse) a team is compared to the statewide median team (where 0.00 represents exact median quality across the state).
For example, a team with a +32.29 PAA is projected to defeat a dead-average Mississippi high school team by ~32 points on a neutral field. Will always be in the same order as r-MPI.
Composite Mississippi Index
Holistic Multi-Factor RatingA holistic rating that evaluates a team's overall quality by blending their primary power index with efficiency metrics—combining MPI, Offensive Rating, Defensive Rating, and Strength of Schedule.
Where MPI focuses strictly on game outcomes and scoring margins vs. expectation, CMI factors in unit efficiency and schedule difficulty. A team with a dominant defense and a grueling schedule will be recognized in CMI even if close margins capped their raw MPI gains.
Offensive & Defensive Ratings
Standardized & Adjusted Unit EfficiencyRaw Ratings (Off. / Def.): Standardized unit efficiency ratings relative to a statewide baseline of 100.00. Every 10 points represents roughly 1 standard deviation from the state mean. Higher values indicate more explosive offenses and more stifling defenses.
Adjusted Ratings (Adj. Off / Adj. Def): An advanced metric that bakes in opponent Strength of Schedule (SOS) by adjusting each unit's performance based on the quality of opposing defenses and offenses faced. These adjusted ratings are directly utilized in calculating the Composite Metric Index (CMI).
Composite Ranking & Schedule
Weighted Consensus & Opponent StrengthComposite Statewide Rank: A weighted consensus ranking calculated as 50% r-MPI Rank + 50% CMI Rank. MPI is excluded from the formula to focus strictly on class-standardized performance and multi-factor efficiency, while PAA is excluded because it shares identical rank ordering with r-MPI.
Strength of Schedule (SOS): The standardized average opponent rating faced to date across all played contests.
Game Spreads & Margins
Expected Margin & Spread ConventionSpread Convention: Spreads are listed as HOME (-SPREAD) vs AWAY. A negative spread indicates the home team is favored by that amount (e.g. Tupelo (-16.5)), while a positive spread indicates the away team is favored (e.g. Biloxi (+7.5)).
Rounding & OOS Games: Model expected margins are rounded to the nearest half-point. Out of State (OOS) games have an expected margin of 0.00 and are listed separately without spreads.
